John’s research goal is to create systems and methodologies that allow groups of robots and humans to collaborate with one another to perform useful tasks. His research is motivated by an interest in the modeling and control of physical systems on the one hand, and in the creation of effective human-machine interfaces on the other. Given continuing technological advances in computing, sensing, actuation, and miniaturization, the nexus of these two interests is an increasingly exciting area to explore. For Autonomous Driving, John’s team is developing algorithms for urban and highway driving that enable more anthropomorphic autonomous behaviors than previously possible, and are seeking to combine these with safety guarantees for a result that combines human-like fluidity with the higher safety potential of rapid-response computing and actuation.

Apurva works as Sr. Application Engineer for Esteco North America. She enjoys guiding and consulting customers on their design, modeling and optimization projects. She has a Masters degree from Clemson University, with a focus on numerical optimization and applied statistics. Recent favorite work projects include, Design for Six Sigma, applying machine learning techniques to engineering datasets and using design optimization in non-traditional applications.
Fredrik has been with MSC software for over 20 years, with main focus on solver-related Adams products. He enjoys diving into new functionality and has recently worked a lot with Adams connected to other tools such as Virtual Test Drive, but also CFD codes and non-linear FE tools, as well as control codes using the FMI standard.
Thomas Benz is the Global Solution Director for Automotive at PTV Group. Thomas Benz studied Mechanical Engineering at Karlsruhe University, now called Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where he received his Diploma (Master’s Degree) in Automotive Engineering. He joined the KIT’s Institute for Transport Studies as a Research Assistant to Prof. Leutzbach and received a PhD from the Faculty of Civil Engineering. After leaving KIT he worked as a freelance consultant in the ITS field and founded Benz Consult. In 2000, Benz Consult merged with PTV Group, and Thomas Benz built up the ITS research within PTV.
The Impact of the Autonomous Vehicle Technology on Future Mobility Models
The speech will analyze how mobility is expected to change in the next few years moving progressively from a concept where the vehicle is owned to mobility as a service concept. Highly automated and fully automated vehicles will help to accelerate this transition. Dr. Michael Schlenkrich studied Theoretical Physics and Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt. He joined Silicon Graphics (SGI), leading multiple technology projects. In 1999, he initiated the creation of a Simulation Process and Data Management (SPDM) Solution at BMW AG, Audi AG, and VW (referred to as CAE-Bench).
In 2001, he joined MSC Software as product management for the SPDM solution (SimManager) and later led the global services team delivering the SPDM solutions. Since 2018, Michael Schlenkrich is a product manager and product strategist at MSC for Cloud Strategy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML). In this function, Michael Schlenkrich has initiated a VTD SCALE as a solution for testing and validation of AV and ADAS functions.
